Din Tai Fung is a Taiwanese restaurant particularise in Xiao Long Bao, or soup dumplings. Originally established in 1958 as a cooking oil retail business, Din Tai Fung was reborn in 1972 as a steamed dumpling and noodle restaurant. Since its inception, Din Tai Fung has become world-renowned for its quality, standardization and service. The Hong Kong branch has been awarded the Michelin star five times. Including Las Vegas Din Tai Fung currently has more than 170 locations in 13 countries around the world.

What Makes Din Tai Fung Las Vegas Special?

History of Din Tai Fung.

Din Tai Fung did not start as the soup dumpling business. It didn’t even start out as a restaurant. It was originally a retail cooking oil business founded by Yang Bingi in 1958. This business flourished at first but then turned downwards decades later, when cooking oil became widely available, thus changing the way people bought it. The decline in business continued. Then, in 1972, at the insistence of a restaurant friend, Yang turned half of the Din Tai Fung oil shop into a restaurant, where he and his wife began to sell steamed dumplings or Xiaolongbao.

When NYTimes named Din Tai Fung one of the “top ten gourmet restaurants in the world” in an article published on January 17, 1993, world expansion was inevitable. Din Tai Fung was the one and only Taiwanese or Chinese restaurant on that list. Arguably, this recognition was the beginning of the time taiwan landed on the map as a destination for global foods.

Further notoriety came in 2010 when the Hong Kong branch of Din Tai Fung was awarded a Michelin star – the first for a restaurant in Taiwan.

Din Tai Fung now has branches in Australia, China, Hong Kong, Indonesia, Japan, Macau, Malaysia, Philippines, Singapore, South Korea, Dubai, USA, Thailand, UK and UAE. (My unspoken cry for supy moksha: New Yorkers like me are still quietly waiting for a missing branch to open here.)
